Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to apply for a full time, three-year PhD Scholarship due to start in April 2011, a joint scheme of the University of Nairobi and Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, Germany.

uon_hawThe programme will be anchored at the University of Nairobi’s Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP).

It is funded as part of the project “Adapting agriculture to climate change: Developing promising strategies using analogue locations in Eastern and Southern Africa.”.

Eligibility

  1. The potential candidates should be nationals of the East African Community.
  2. The age limit is 40 years and below.
  3. Must be Holders of a Bachelor of Science degree with at least an Upper Second Class Honours in Agriculture, Crop Science, Range Management, Forestry, Environmental Science, or any other relevant biological and natural sciences equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the University of Nairobi Senate and a Masters Degree in one of the above areas or equivalent.

Mode of application

Applications should be sent to the Project Officer, Ecological Society for Eastern Africa (ESEA) and should be accompanied by a brief Curriculum Vitae of NOT more than 2 pages with a photograph, a letter of motivation (one page) and two letters of reference from a professor and (if relevant) current employer. Female candidates are highly encouraged to apply.

Closing date for applications is 25th February 2011. All selected candidates shall be notified by 1st March 2011 2011. The Scholarship

The scholarship will cover tuition, book allowance, a monthly stipend of US$ 400 (four hundred US dollars per month) and cost of field research and travel to Germany. Female candidates will be given priority for scholarship awards.

Since their initiation in 1976, the Rolex Awards for Enterprise have supported more than 30 environmental projects impacting over 60 species of rare and endangered plants and animals.

On many occasions, Rolex Laureates and Associate Laureates have been supported and guided in their work by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

The Rolex Awards for Enterprise recognize pioneers whose work contributes broadly to the betterment of humankind and the natural environment. Rolex provides selected individuals with US$100,000 towards their projects, a Rolex chronometer, and the benefits of international publicity.

Rolex has launched its latest edition of the awards with a worldwide call for entries. Prospective entrants can apply to the 2012 Rolex Awards through the website. The deadline for pre-applications is 31 May 2011.

The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is pleased to announce the 2011 Call for Concept Notes as part of the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF).

The CIFSRF is a 5-year, CA$62-million fund that supports research partnerships between Canadian and developing-country research organizations for applied research to find lasting solutions to fight hunger and food insecurity in the developing world.

The Fund is a core element of CIDA’s Food Security Strategy and of IDRC’s food security programming priorities.

Project budgets under the upcoming call will be in the range of CA$1 to $5 million.
